Life imitates art
Those familiar with The Censor may have noticed a strange similarity between the plot of Miss Fontaine’s film in the play and Nine Songs, a new film by British Director Michael Winterbottom. Nine Songs has sparked controversy by the most sexually explicit film to be passed for general release by the British Board of Film Classification. It tells the story of a couple from meeting to separation but solely through their sexual encounters, which is precisely the plot of Miss Fontaine’s film in The Censor! In the play, Miss Fontaine seduces and eventually fulfills the Censor’s sexual fantasy by defecating in front of him in order to convince him of the artistic merit of her film. The Other Theatre Company would not like to conjecture on how Mr Winterbottom got his film passed…
